Sapapali'i is the honorary seat and home for the esteemed Malietoa title
and its succession of heirs for over four centuries. The Malietoa title
is only conferred upon those who are direct descendants of any of the
three following branches of the family:
a. Malietoa Moli
b. Malietoa Talavou
c. Malietoa Gatuitasina
HRH Malietoa Tanumafili II (b. January 4, 1913), heir apparent and
descended from the line of Malietoa Moli is currently Samoa's Head of
State, our island nation’s constitutional monarch (O le Ao le Malo). His
Highness came into this distinguished honor on January 1, 1962 and has
served faithfully and consecutively to the present alone since the passing
of Tupua Tamasese Mea'ole in 1963. This makes him the longest serving
Head of State in all of Samoa’s history, second only to Queen Elizabeth II
among world leaders.
Due to the convenience offered by its locality to seat of the government
in Mulinu'u, HRH Malietoa Tanumafili II currently makes his home in the
village of Fa’atoia, on the island of Upolu.

In comparison to 2003, there is a slight shift in Sapapalii's census.
This was due to persons moving towards Apia, Upolu or other villages in
Savaii.

Sapapalii has the boast of
Samoa's finest cricket team in all of Samoa. Lupe o Siliva garnered the
honors for the village at the 2004 Teuila Festival recently held in
Upolu in September. This honor comes on the heel of an eight-year
hiatus. They were well known throughout the Pacific Rim prior to this
most recent honorable championship.
